Window coverings should make your life easier, more convenient, safer and better for the health and happiness of your family. Unfortunately, there are a number of window covering mistakes homeowners make that they end up regretting. We are here to help you identify what could go wrong and how to approach things the right way. Right off the bat, we recommend getting the pros involved because window coverings are an investment that you want to last for years to come!
Choosing Style, Forgetting Function
We know how important it is to have beautiful window coverings in your home. After all, window treatments ARE the art of the window. But, the style should not be prioritized over creating the right function for the room in question. Many homeowners tend to get overwhelmed by all the decisions, and of course, style is what you see. We would warn you to jot your function “must-haves” down as you are making decisions, and then keep coming back to that list as you choose.

Our designers will work with you, room-by-room, to ensure you get the right features. This is a little cheat sheet to help get you thinking about what’s important for the window coverings you select for the rooms of your home:
- South-facing rooms: energy efficiency for all day sun
- Bedrooms: room darkening, temperature control, sound absorption
- Bathrooms: privacy, adjustable light control, materials for humidity/moisture
- Kitchen: light filtering (invite light, but reduce glare), easy to clean
- Living room: customizable light control (multi-function space), privacy options, reduced glare (screens)
- Home office: customizable light control, privacy options, reduced glare (screens)
- Media rooms/bonus space: blackout options for media, dual shades for multi-function
Taking Incorrect Measurements
It’s easy to do–measuring can be tricky because of how intricate window covering customization can be. Some of the errors that result from poor measuring are: Large light gaps, shades that are too big, hardware that scrapes, shades that fit one section of window, but not the entire window, (this happens when windows are not square). Our window covering specialists are the experts here, since we measure with lasers, knowing that even an 1/8 of an inch mistake could be costly. Our design consults are free because we know how important it is for you to get professional measurements. Still considering taking your own measurements? We’ve got some tips:
- Decide whether you are measuring for inside mount or outside mount
- Use a metal tape measure (not cloth), or a laser if you are experienced with it
- Measure at the top, middle and bottom of the window, from side to side and from top to bottom on both sides
- Determine if there are obstacles, like handles or cranks, that could interfere with function
- Evaluate the wall area around the window if you have chosen outside mount, (consider the casing, space available and wall material)
- If you’re choosing inside mount, identify the window depth to see if the shades will fit

Getting What You’ve Paid For
Why would it be a problem to get what you pay for? Because window treatments can be expensive, and cheaper prices often mean cheap quality. This is one of those window covering mistakes that can end up costing more in the long run, since cheap window shades, blinds and shutters can break, crack or warp. The operating system can stop working. The fabrics can fade. We understand that the cost of today’s window treatments can surprise homeowners. But even the “cheap” ones are not necessarily inexpensive. So, you spend a good chunk of money, and then you’re left feeling frustrated and disappointed. How can you avoid this?
- Do your homework when it comes to the brand
- Look at the quality standards and the warranty
- Read reviews (If you choose to work with a small business, know that everyone makes mistakes–pay attention to how they handle mistakes, and how they speak to their customers.)
Missing Out on the Best Features
One of the window covering mistakes homeowners express after trying to do it themselves is, “I wish I would have known…” The window covering industry is vast–full of features, operating systems and other details that can easily overwhelm the buyer. If you find yourself overwhelmed, chances are you might miss out on something special because it seems that it’s all just too much. That’s what’s nice about working with a window covering specialist. They sit and listen to the challenges you are facing, as well as the vision you have for the atmosphere in your home. They can suggest features without overloading you with every option on the market. What would be a few of the top features to check out before you buy?
Motorization: Today’s smart shades can be such an easy and convenient way to create the right benefits in your home.
Dual shades: You can have both light filtering and room darkening on the same window, depending on circumstances or time of day.
Top down bottom up: Enjoy light entering without sacrificing privacy.

Not Coordinating Swatches with Your Home
Fabrics and materials can look quite different under in-store lighting vs in your own home. Depending on the room and how the light shines in, the undertones of color will change–even from room to room, fabric swatches can appear differently. That’s why it’s so important to allow the swatches into your home, taking a peek at them at different times over the course of the day. Place the swatch in the window to see how the opacity can affect the coloring. Compare the look within your space, next to your window trim and furnishings.
