The future is green. As more and more consumers find themselves discovering ways to increase the eco-friendly choices in their lives, they’re looking for companies that are making sustainability a priority. We’ve partnered with Hunter Douglas over the years because of the high quality and beautifully styled window coverings they create, but also because they are always on the forefront of making better decisions in terms of responsible production and materials. Want sustainable window treatments? We’ve got you!
Responsible Production
Manufacturing is a challenge when it comes to sustainability across every category of goods. That being said, there are ways that Hunter Douglas has taken steps to be more responsible about production. All Hunter Douglas window treatments are GREENGUARD Gold certified for low chemical emissions. This accomplishment means that every window covering product they create has been put to a rigorous standard of testing, promoting safer indoor air and reducing health risks. This can be a positive move, not just for homeowners, but also for commercial builders who are attempting to achieve green building ratings.

Hunter Douglas is also committed to responsible forestry, ensuring that they are taking part in the management of valuable natural resources. The Parkland Wood Blinds collection is a great example, as the materials are harvested from forests being responsibly managed. They also donate to the Arbor Day Foundation, for every purchase of the wood blinds collection, in support of preserving trees and rainforests.
Utility Savings
Who doesn’t love to save money? Sustainable window treatments offer valuable savings on utility bills, but some of these ideas might be news to you. Many homeowners are aware of energy efficient window coverings that keep the interior temperature of the home regulated. Keep it cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Some window coverings block direct rays, while others insulate. It’s an amazing experience to be able to keep your home comfortable, but also experience powerful savings on your monthly energy bills. But that’s not all.

We have features that can bring light into your home–allowing you to forgo the use of artificial lights, relying on natural sunshine instead–all while maintaining control and comfort. Sheer shades invite light by stopping harsh rays at the window, but pulling soft, filtered light into the room. Top down shades lower from the top, just enough to bring in illuminating light without compromising the temperature or privacy of the space. No electricity needed!

A fast favorite for motorized blinds, Hunter Douglas is offering ways to help people stop using disposable AA batteries that simply add to landfills. The rechargeable battery wand is possible on all new and existing PowerView automated shades, (Yes, it can be retro-fitted!). Another option for sustainable window treatments is with solar powered window shades.
Renewable & Recycled Materials
When it comes to production, we mentioned responsible forestry. However, there’s more to it than that. Recycled materials have entered the conversation. From the recycled aluminum of metal blinds, to roller shade fabrics made of recycled ocean plastics, efforts are being made to both clean up the environment and make something new out of something that was previously disposable. We even have collections where 50% of the materials used have been recycled.

Not only that, but one of our collections, Provenance Woven Woods, is made with woven fibers from natural resources known for their rapid growth. This means that the replacement rate is fast–so harvesting and using the resources won’t have a negative impact on the environment.
